Not every artist here actually has a connection to Houston, but each has Texas (and West Coast) credentials, and each recorded for the Modern/RPM/Flair/Crown group of labels in the early to mid-'50s. They also have in common a vibrant, loose and raucous approach to the jump blues that gives this anthology a remarkably consistent tone. Among the highlights are Melvin Daniels' soulful "I'll Be There" (backed by King Curtis and his band), Lucky Enois' breezy and hipstering "Zig Zag Ziggin'," a pair of impressive outings from Preacher Stevens, "Whoopin' & Hollerin'" and "So Far Away," and four unnamed instrumental jams from King Curtis.
