Artist: Latimore

Profile:

Deep-voiced Latimore’s sultry mid-’70s output for Miami’s Glades label was a steamy marriage of soul and blues. Initially billed as Benny Latimore, the Tennessean began recording for Miami mogul Henry Stone in 1965, and his late-’60s Dade singles are solid deep soul. Dropping his first name on Glades, Latimore finally found stardom in 1973 with a jazzy reading of T-Bone Walker’s “Stormy Monday.” He topped the soul lists in 1974 with the anguished “Let’s Straighten It Out,” a simmering soul/blues hybrid, and encored with the incendiary “Keep the Home Fires Burnin’” the next year. Most of Latimore’s Glades sides were produced in Miami by Steve “Every Day I Have to Cry” Alaimo, and when he wasn’t cutting his own hits, Latimore acted as a house pianist for parent TK Records. Latimore moved to Malaco during the ’80s, his appeal undiminished. Bill Dahl, All Music Guide

Although Latimore’s early albums are his deepest, these later records still have some very nice moments, and the classic modern/southern sound that made Latimore so huge. This one was recorded at Muscle Shoals, and includes the cuts “Out To Get ‘Cha”, “We Got To Hit It Off”, “Ain’t Nothing Like A Sweet Woman’s Love”, and “Dig A Little Deeper”.

Latimore’s digging deeper, and sounding greater than ever – working at Muscle Shoals with some great Miami production from Steve Alaimo – and coming across with a sound that’s even warmer and more sophisticated than before – yet still very true to its deep soul roots too! At a time when some of Latimore’s contemporaries might have been heading for the disco, he keeps it real and focuses on the best mellow modes that always made him so great – particularly those which use keyboards next to his unique vocal approach. Heck, even the album’s odd cover of “Tonight’s The Night” sounds pretty darn great – although we’re even more partial to the original tracks like “Out To Get Cha”, “We Got To Hit It Off”, and “Dig A Little Deeper” – as well as his sweet version of George Jackson’s “Ain’t Nothing Like A Sweet Woman’s Love”.
