The Staple Singers signed with Epic Records after leaving jazz/blues/folk label Riverside Records. From then until the middle of 1968, they recorded six albums for the label, all of which are featured in this box. Three of these classic albums, Pray On, For What It’s Worth and What The World Needs Now Is Love, are making their CD debut and this now makes virtually all of their recorded work available on CD. During the years with Epic, The Staple Singers’ sound developed into the soul/folk sub-genre that came to a commercial peak at Stax Records during the 1970s. This 66-track box set is the first-ever retrospective of their Epic years and features songs by Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield, Burt Bacharach and Hal David as well as numerous original compositions by Pop Staples. His original song, ‘Why (Am I Treated So Bad)’, has become a soul standard. Despite their newly-found commercial success, the group did not leave any of their gospel roots behind. All of the songs that are not gospel standards are imbued with a message of hope and inspiration, fully in keeping with their Christian music roots. Mavis Staples is featured on lead vocals on the majority of tracks but there are also several vocals from Pops Staples and his blues-drenched guitar gets much exposure too. Pervis Staples can be heard on three recitations with Bob Dylan’s ‘John Brown’, which are especially notable. Mavis Staples is the only member of the family still active and regularly touring the world, keeping The Staples Singers legacy alive. Pervis has been long retired and Pops, Yvonne and Cleotha have all passed away.

The Stems "Mushroom Soup" The Citadel Years 1987

Leaders Dom Mariani and Richard Lane formed Australia garage/punk rockers the Stems in 1983. Playing such local venues as The Wizbah, The Old Melbourne, and The Shenton Park on a regular basis, the group built a substantial following, resulting in the release of their debut single in mid-1985, "Make You Mine" b/w "She's A Monster."..stems-Mushroom-Soup-1.jpg…Further releases soon followed, including singles, EPs (such as the Love Will Grow EP, produced by Radio Birdman's Rob Younger), and full-lengths (1987's best-selling At First Sight Violets Are Blue). Strangely, at the height of their success, the group suddenly disbanded. But over the years, Mariani and Lane have been able to put their differences aside to reunite the Stems for the odd reunion show, including a pair of shows in 1997 (which coincided with the release an archival live release from the good old days, titled Weed Out!: Live at the Old Melbourne). - Artist Biography by Greg Pratostems-Mushroom-Soup-2.jpgtrax:

The Chantays "Waiting For The Tide" 1997

"Pipeline" (published as sheet music in 1962 by Downey Music Publishing) has become a standard surf rock hit. The tune has since been covered by Welk (on the Dot album Scarlet O'Hara), Al Caiola (United Artists - Album "Greasy Kid Stuff"), The Ventures, Agent Orange, Hank Marvin, Lively Ones. Dick Dale with the help of Stevie Ray Vaughan (Grammy Nominated), by thrash metal band Anthrax, Bad Manners, and also by Johnny Thunders. "Pipeline" has also been featured in many films, television programs and commercials. It also appears on numerous compilation albums.chantays-Waiting-1.jpgFormed in Santa Ana in 1962, the Chantays were five high school buddies -- Brian Carman (guitar, vocals), Bob Spickard (guitar, vocals), Bob Marshall (piano, keyboards), Warren Waters (bass), and Bob Welch (drums) -- ranging in age from 13 to 17. Playing local dances, they specialized in surf music, and at least in the beginning were primarily an instrumental outfit. They were spotted and signed up by manager Dale Smallins, and in 1962 Carman and Spickard composed and published a piece entitled "Pipeline," which went on to become one of the biggest and best instrumental surf hits ever recorded. Its simple yet memorable melody and beautiful guitar line -- lyrical yet evoking excitement and motion -- and deceptively complex embellishments, all backed by a highly animated and propulsive bass part, made it naturally appealing in the musical landscape of the time. Additionally, the record had a very natural sound that made it seductive to the ear. One reason for its success may have been the fact that, so the story goes, it was actually recorded in the back of a particular surf shop (where the original master tape was reportedly found more than 25 years later) -- perhaps it was just a practical decision to cut the song there, or they were seeking some kind of psychic verisimilitude, but if it is true, it didn't hurt the finished product one bit.
"Pipeline" became a number one single and rocketed the quintet out of Santa Ana and straight to national fame. They followed it up with a brace of singles, none of which saw even a shadow of the sales of "Pipeline," and also cut two albums, Pipeline and The Two Sides of the Chantays. Those were fine showcases for the group's strengths -- and a few weaknesses -- but made very little impact. Their repertoire was crowded with rock & roll covers and "Pipeline" sound-alikes, as well as some cutesy plays on the Shadows' sound of the same period, and none of their follow-up singles charted. Meanwhile, "Pipeline" not only got heavy radio play for years after it left the charts, but also entered the musical mainstream as a pop instrumental standard (in particular, television viewers who lived in the New York area during the early/mid-'60s may remember "Pipeline" being used almost weekly as background music whenever kids show host Chuck McCann would come out dressed as Ace Jackson, to read the "Smilin' Jack" comic strip on his Sunday television show Let's Have Fun.
Competent players who went heavy on the rumbling bass, ghostly reverb, and electric keyboards, the Chantays were very much a one-shot act. The group remained perennially popular on the nostalgia and oldies circuits, with new members coming in alongside of Carman and Spickard, and Welch subsequently rejoined. In 1994, the group released their first new album in over 30 years, called Next Set, and they followed it up in 1997 with Waiting for the Tide. As of 2005, the band was still working regularly. ~ Bruce Eder & Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

Dexter Gordon "Gettin' Around" 1965

Dexter Gordon's mid-'60s period living in Europe also meant coming back to the U.S. for the occasional recording session…Dexter-Gordon-gettin-around-1.jpg...His teaming with Bobby Hutcherson was intriguing in that the vibraphonist was marking his territory as a maverick and challenging improviser. Here the two principals prove compatible in that they have a shared sense of how to create sheer beauty in a post-bop world. Add the brilliant Barry Harris to this mix, and that world is fortunate enough to hear these grand masters at their creative peak, stoked by equally extraordinary sidemen like bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Billy Higgins, all on loan from Lee Morgan's hitmaking combo. The subtle manner in which Gordon plays melodies or caresses the most recognizable standard has always superseded his ability to ramble through rough-and-tumble bebop. It's hard to resist how Gordon massages the light and sweet bossa nova "Manha de Carnaval" hand in hand with Hutcherson, the heartfelt way "Who Can I Turn To?" or "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" is turned into a personalized statement, or how the co-leaders take Frank Foster's Count Basie staple, "Shiny Stockings," beyond a classic and into immortal territory. Where Gordon and Hutcherson's true strength lies is in their ability to listen and balance their sound into a unified whole beyond any other tenor sax-vibraphone combination you might care to name, unless it's Hutch's partnership in the ensuing years with Harold Land. Picking up on a Sonny Rollins idea, "Heartaches" is a loping cowboy-type swinger with some lustrous comping from Hutcherson and Harris, while the light, cat-prancing "Le Coiffeur" is the highlight among highlights, a stealth calypso with Gordon's deftly rendered staccato notation. One has to listen closer to the pianist on this date, as he buoys the others without demanding equal space, but he is just as reverberant. While this is not Gordon's ultimate hard bop date, it is reflective of his cooling out in Europe, adopting a tonal emphasis more under the surface than in your face. It's not essential, but quite enjoyable, and does mark a turning point in his illustrious career. [The CD version contains two bonus tracks, including the Onzy Matthews composition "Very Saxily Yours" with a melody very similar to "Shiny Stockings," Hutcherson alone during a second chorus, and a classy quarter-to-eighth note solo by Gordon. Ben Tucker's "Flick of a Trick" is added on, an 11-minute groove blues that lets Harris cut loose, digging in after-hours style.] - AllMusic Review by Michael G.
