"LEGENDS OF GUITAR" - Country, Vol. 1

$

The guitar’s evolution from rhythm to lead was paralleled by the increasing renown of its country players. But even with the guitar’s lead role, Nashville’s system often subordinated the stardom of pickers to the vocalists (or band leaders) on whose records they performed. Guitar Player’s 1990 collection highlights seventeen stellar guitar performances, ranging from hotshot slingers like Joe Maphis whose instrumentals serve up his flying fingers front-and-center, to brilliant players like Grady Martin, whose Mexicali-flavored picking serves as a duet to Marty Robbins’ vocal on "El Paso."..LEGENDS-OF-GUITAR-Country-1-1.jpg...The range of musical and guitar playing styles presented here is astonishing. Maphis and his disciple Larry Collins flat pick up a storm in "Hurricane." Jimmy Bryant & Speedy West duel with guitar and steel on "The Night Rider." Earl "Joaquin" Murphey provides swinging steel in Spade Cooley’s big-band. Merle Travis shows off his acoustic fingerpicking talents (as opposed to the honky-tonk he’s more commonly known for) on "Cannon Ball Stomp," and Chet Atkins (backed by Homer and Jethro) shows off his variation of Travis’ style on "Galloping on the Guitar." Leon McAuliffe (of Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys) and Leon Rhodes (of Ernest Tubb’s Texas Troubadours) shine on a pair of instrumentals.
Carl Perkins, remembered today mostly for his rockabilly sides demonstrates his exceptional country skills on "Tennessee," an early side waxed for Sun. Later samplings include the chiming 12-string of Roger McGuinn supporting the picking of Clarence White on the Byrds’ "Nashville West," and Reggie Young’s 1981 work on Merle Haggard’s loping "I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink." Additional highlights include Bud Isaacs watershed pedal steel appearance on Webb Pierce’s "Slowly" and Doc Watson’s folk-country fingerpicked cover of John D. Loudermilk’s "Windy and Warm." The inclusion of longtime Sons of the Pioneers guitarist Roy Lanham’s bebop playing on "Lost Weekend," is a fine, though not particularly relevant to the theme of the collection - too bad a Pioneer’s side couldn’t be included. The disc’s lack of chronological sequencing is a bit puzzling. Audio quality is generally excellent (with a few pops and crackles on some of the earlier transcription work), and Rich Kienzle’s extensive liner notes are thorough and engaging. (Amazon)

Push you into the weekend like what! If you we didn’t tell you this record was ten years old, you would never know. Previously unreleased, Redefinition Records let loose another track from the acclaimed Y Society (Insight & Damu The Fudgemunk) record Travel At Your Own Pace. A vinyl exclusive, this track is definitely elicits good feelings and vibes. Takes me back to when hip hop was fun, lyricists put some care into their craft, and beats were hard as three day old shit, plus the scratches are right on point. If you have been following Damu’s career from the early days, it’s got his classic production, and both Insight and Damu rip it up respectfully all over this track.

Ten years is a long time for anything to hold one’s attention.” Things change. People lose interest. New things come along. Time flies. If something lasts 10 years, it has to be good, right?- Joe Buck

Every time I drop the needle on this one, I just get transported back. It’s been a long time since hip hop made you feel like this. Let’s face it, this is timeless, and if it has lasted a decade, guess what? It can last at least ten more. This record will be looked at as one of those joints. A joint that hyped the crowd hyped ten years ago, today, and well into the future. Highly respected, often imitated, but never duplicated, Y Society have burned a stamp into the wood grain of this hip hop game. Remember when you heard it and tell us later how good it still is.

Vŏdû 155 is the 1994 self-titled debut album by Vŏdû 155, consisting of Haitian brothers Lionel and Constance Bernard. Produced by Bill Laswell, this album was released on Mango Records, a subsidiary of Island.
Haitian brothers who moved to New York as teenagers and quickly immersed themselves in the city's melting pot of musical influences, Vŏdû 155's Lionel and Constance Bernard are very conscious of and true to the spirituality of their roots, but are by no means limited by them. Just as Haitian voodoo is a hybrid of African tribal beliefs influenced by Spanish Catholicism and other forms of Christianity, Vŏdû 155's music is a creative mixture of African rhythms, Haitian patois, Jamaican reggae/dancehall, and American funk and hip-hop. On songs like "Vodu Funkadelic," "Zaka," and the autobiographical "Boom Boom Bip," the band (which includes bassist/producer Bill Laswell, guitarist Nicky Skopelitis, and reggae legend Sly Dunbar on drums) combines their disparate influences in an original manner that renders their sound virtually incomparable. Although its broad reach occasionally exceeds its grasp, Vŏdû 1555's debut is an innovative album that deserves to be heard by world music fusion fans and more adventurous hip-hop heads alike.

Genre: hard rock, electronic, hip-hop

Mistaken Identity is the 1996 album by guitarist Vernon Reid. Known as the founder of the black rock band Living Colour, this album is not only filled with hard rock songs but it also has electronic and hip-hop qualities, due to this project being co-produced with Prince Paul, along with Teo Macero. Reid is helped out on this album by Masque, who were Don Byron, DJ Logic, Leon Gruenbaum, Curtis Watts, and Hank Schroy. This was released by 550 Music via Epic Records.

Facing Vernon Reid's first solo album with expectations of finding another Living Colour album would be a very wrong thing to do. Here is proof that the split was not caused by profane reasons like personal differences or even wanting to earn more money, but by at least one musician striving to step into different musical territories. For Reid, this partly means going back to his roots in jazz and funk.

Mistaken Identity is anything but a fast food album; it comes along as quite of a challenge to the unprepared listener. Large parts of it are instrumental; something such as a simple melody is nowhere to be found. Only repeated listens start to reveal hooks in the complex soundscapes. The most accessible tracks, like "CP Time" or "Saint Cobain", are characterized by a groundwork of percussions, strong bass, rap vocals, and Reid showing his muscles on the guitar, almost the only instances reminding of his past with Living Colour. Other tracks like "Lighnin'" have a prominent blues feel, with beautifully whining guitars, yet others are almost pure jazz. Another characteristic of Mistaken Identity is lots of creatively used samples. As so often occurs, the names of producers give a clear key to an album: besides Vernon Reid himself, these are Teo Macero, who has previously worked with jazz greats like Miles Davis, and Prince Paul, who produced De La Soul's masterpiece 3 Feet High And Rising.

Vernon Reid's Mistaken Identity may catch some buyers on the wrong foot, and will most certainly be less commercially successful than the platinum-selling Living Colour albums. But listeners taking their time to explore it will be richly rewarded. Here is a remarkable album made by highly gifted and dedicated individuals, perfectly produced, with new things to be discovered in every listen. Time will tell how it will hold up, but chances are that we are witnesses of what might once be considered an essential release by many.

Vintage Music is a compilation series released by MCA Records in 1986. There were 10 volumes when released on vinyl and cassette but the compact disc versions put together two at a time, so there was a total of five CD's in the series: 1 & 2, 3 & 4, and so on. This series was remastered by Steve Hoffman from the best available master recordings, with a few songs taken from versions that had not been heard before. Notable is the version of Steppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild" used here.

Jim Byrnes is a leading Canadian bluesman, a guy who has been around the block a few times and knows and understands the music perfectly. Now nearing the age of seventy, Byrnes is again joined here by producer and guitarist Steve Dawson, the seventh time the pair have worked together. Dawson’s fretwork is always tasteful, refined and grounded in blues with traditional flourishes and flair.

Twelve tracks include excellent covers of Willie Dixon’s Weak Brain, Narrow Mind, and a full-band sound for the ever-popular, Ninety-Nine And A Half. Byrnes even includes a wonderfully brave take on the Leonard Cohen classic, Everybody Knows, here given a distinctly bluesy undercurrent, together with another near-standard in Anywhere The Wind Blows. There are soul-based covers, straight blues and modern twists on tradition all confidently and expertly delivered from a guy who, on the evidence here, is currently working pretty much at the top of the league.

This is a truly excellent release, full of gritty vocals, inspired interpretation and soulful, sensitive support musicianship. Byrnes knows exactly when to step up to the plate, full throttle blaring and blasting and just when to ease off, slow it down and control the delivery with a heightened feeling and understanding.
