Funk legend Bootsy Collins is back, and the whole world is going to feel it. The P-Funk pioneer will release World Wide Funk on Oct. 27, his first new album since 2011’s Tha Funk Capital of the World.

Collins turned to musical friends both new and old for accompaniment on his new album, with an eye-popping feature lineup including the likes of Snoop Dogg, Buckethead, Victor Wooten, Eric Gales, Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Chuck D, Musiq Soulchild, the late Bernie Worrell and many more. But World Wide Funk is more than just a carefree, funky party—it’s also a call to activism. “Bootz on the ground, baby!” Colllins declares on the title track. “The whole concept,” Collins says, “was not only about playing music or being current on this album, but about teaching people how to funk for themselves so they can bring some funk to get some. We bring them hope like dope, so not one Funkateer chokes.” That’s a message of unity and uplift that this world needs to hear, perhaps now more than ever.

That Thing You Do! is a 1996 movie directed, written by and starring Tom Hanks and this is its soundtrack. The film is a mockumentary about a pop band from the early 1960's called The Wonders, who had one hit song and nothing else. The soundtrack features all of the songs by The Wonders plus songs by groups they battled for their short time for stardom. The soundtrack was released on 24 September, 1996 through Play-Tone/Epic Soundtrax.
This is the soundtrack to the Tom Hanks-written and -directed movie about a fictional rock & roll band from Erie, PA (the Wonders), who luck into their one and only hit record in 1964. As a souvenir of the movie, this soundtrack more than fills the bill. But as a collection of great songs, it more than stands on its own as well. The tunes and performances perfectly evoke that cusp of time in rock history when one era was ending and another was beginning, while the production values are retro and yet modern, clean, and sharp. If you're a fan of mid-'60s British pop, here's a new recording that adds some more great songs and performances to that genre.

The Buddah Box is a 3CD box set compilation released by ESX in 1993. It honors the Buddah label and some of its more well known subsidiaries, including Kama Sutra, Sussex, Hot Wax and Sutra. It contains a nice exploration of their roots as pop and bubble gum music aficionados before they explored rock, gospel, soul, disco, and hip-hop by the time the labels closed shop in the early 1980's.

Vision One: Vision Festival 1997 Compiled is a 1997 jazz compilation double CD set. Released by Aum Fidelity, it was recorded from a festival in New York in 1997. Some of the artists featured include William Parker, John Zorn, David S. Ware, Assif Tsahar, and Thurston Moore (then of Sonic Youth). Only 1000 copies of this had been made.
Aum Fidelity is in the midst of a period when every recording is a must-have. This compilation of live tracks from 1997's Vision Festival is more than just the documentation of a particular event. The Festival, which brought together the core of the label's roster (Matthew Shipp, David S. Ware, William Parker, Other Dimensions in Music) with the likes of John Zorn, Thurston Moore, Butch Morris and many others, was more than a series of concerts. Forgive the soapbox stance but it's an indication that improvisation , as inherited from the free jazz pioneers of the late fifties and early sixties, is now the source of a vital community of artists that are, against huge odds and commercial apathy, forging a coalition that is cutting across lines. Those lines can be seen as musical, generational, geographical, economic, and even racial but the important thing is that this thing is happening.

All of which wouldn't mean much if this double CD set didn't deliver some primo listening, which it does in volume. The performances here shift from the cascading scree and dizzying drumming of Rashied Ali's Prima Material to the remarkable inner workings of William Parker and The Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra to Mark Dresser's remarkably subtle bass solo on "Bosnia." There's a real gem to be found in Thurston Moore/Lawrence Cook/Jon Voigt trio's "Fuzz Against Junk," which features beautifully subtle guitar-bass interplay that builds off the best traditions of the rock power trio and moves into transparent waters. Out of fifteen tracks there's only one that left me cold, a meandering piano-flute duet by Matthew Shipp and Rob Brown and I'll admit that's mostly because my flute tolerance level is so low. The rest are all worth going back to again and again. Most importantly, Vision Volume One fulfills the prime directive of any compilation; it entices you to check out the recordings of the artists represented. Personally, that will mean the pursuit of Other Dimensions in Music and The Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra.

The CD booklet provides some examples of the artwork associated with the Vision Festival and refers to the interdisciplinary work that went on there between painters, sculptors, dancers, and poets. The entire package is worth picking up.
